Quiroga, makes its debut. Natural Sound, the Dingo, Beyond Ordinary, Guild Theatre and La Montañita Co-op advertise in this historic issue. Bandido Hideout offers a coupon: beef or chicken tostadas with a drink for $1.95. • The Cold War ends.

• Congress passes a bill paving the way for radioactive waste to be stored at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s underground bunker in Carlsbad, N.M.

• The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office finds itself red-faced as Sheriff Ray Gallagher is indicted on six criminal charges, and spokesperson Ernie Watson is arrested during an APD vice sting for soliciting a prostitute.

• Trent Dimas, a gymnast from Albuquerque, wins a gold medal at the Olympic summer games in Barcelona.

• Declares NuCity, “The Golden West is one of the busiest places to be seen in Albuquerque.”

• New Mexicans help elect Bill Clinton as president. It’s the first time a Democrat is favored here since John F. Kennedy in 1964.

• Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs hits cinemas. Some of us start wearing ties and Ray-Bans to work.
