Thank you, Burque photo fiends! We were totally overwhelmed with the number and overall quality of the submissions we received for this year’s photo contest. After a very thorough and lengthy discussion, chock full of polysyllabic words and fancy art school phrases, our panel of judges declared three winners. First place winner, Johnny Gomez, will walk away with a brand-spankin’-new Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 camera. So here they are, the winners, some runners up and honorable mentions, all presented in the finest medium possible to facilitate the enjoyment of the roughly 78,125 of you who picked this issue up.

1ST PLACE Johnny Gomez

As a visual art form, what photography offers that’s inaccessible to other media is the ability to capture a fleeting moment with near perfect fidelity—one reason we gave this little slice of Burqeño life first place. Johnny truly captured a piece of the culture we share in this town.

2ND PLACE Colleen Guthery

A snow-covered pasture, a wooly beast: Colleen captures the portrait of another part of our state culture from her ranch in northern New Mexico.

Thommy Thompson

3RD PLACE Thommy Thompson

Our third places winner elicits so many questions. What is happening here? Did he just find that or did he have to set it up? Is that paw real? Did he touch it? Mysterious and sublime, this image would make the finest of all creative writing prompts.
