The Alibi's fifth annual Photo Contest

New Mexico has two mottos: one found on license plates and another uttered by natives, as much in jest as in seriousness. Both were proven by the photographers who submitted to our fifth annual Photo Contestwe live in an enchanting state that moves at the speed of mañana.

With less than two weeks until the deadline, the bin labeled “Photo Contest Entries” sat at the edge of my desk with few envelopes within its walls. Never fear, I assured my fellow judging panel, more will come. Days later, the contents of the bin neared capacity and my e-mail inbox filled. Scenes of New Mexico sunsets, Bosque fall, frozen rivers and South Valley smiles came flowing in with minutes to spare from Flicker groups, high school photography students, pocket camera-carrying street travelers and graphic artists seeking recognition. From hundreds of entries, we painstakingly narrowed it down to those you see on these pages. Very painstakingly.

Many thanks to Nick Brown, Christie Chisholm, Marisa Demarco, Molly Lindsay, Simon McCormack, Tom Nayder, Devin D. O'Leary, Jeff Drew and Jesse Schulz for participating in the selection process. Also, thanks to our sponsors for donating prizes for the winners: Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW, 344-8139), the Guild Cinema (3405 Central NE, 255-1848), Hinkle Family Fun Center (12931 Indian School NE, 299-3100), Outpost Productions (210 Yale SE, 268-0044) and the Calico Café (6855 Fourth Street NW, 890-9150).

Congrats to the winners and honorable mentions, and to all who entered for making the competition so tough. This year’s entries were, by far, the most impressive we’ve seen yet. Winning photographers may pick up their prizes at the front desk of the Alibi offices (413 Central NW) any time from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call 346-0660 ext. 255 to arrange other plans.

First Place

Bisti Badlands by Rip Williams

Taken in the Bisti Wilderness south of Farmington, Rip used high dynamic range to capture the contrasting colors in this image of a winding flood stream. For first place, Rip wins a copy of Albuquerque Then and Now by Mo Palmer (Thunder Bay Press), four tickets to the Guild, $40 in certificates to Hinkle Family Fun Center, two passes good at Outpost Productions and $30 for eats at the Calico Café.

Second Place

Run, Pepper, Run! by Peter Norby

A boy, his puppy and a perfect moment caught on film snags Peter second place and a prize pack including two tickets to the Guild, $40 at Hinkle Family Fun Center and $20 in certs to the Calico Café.

Third Place

Cart, Girl by Randall Scott

Many of our judges put Randall's black-and-white portraits in their top three. His photo of Chloe sitting in a grocery cart caught our attention, gaining Randall two tickets to the Guild, $20 at Hinkle Family Fun Center and $10 in certs to the Calico Café.
