Kickin’ it with St. Nick
A lyrical interview with Santa Claus
By Renée Chavez'Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the mall
Every creature was stirring, especially in the great hall;
The shining decorations were put up with care,
Mainly because jovial St. Nicholas was there;
The children were waiting to take pictures with him,
While visions of presents filled their heads to the brim;
Their parents with their shopping bags, and I in my coat,
Had just settled in line, while I perused the questions I'd wrote,
When up from the sign-in table there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the queue to see what was the matter.
Past the wee kiddies I flew like a flash,
He said he had time to talk as he tightened his jingle bell sash.
There were 15 minutes before the pictures would start,
Enough time for a quick interview on his part,
When what to my wondering ears did appear,
That he was a man of few words, though filled with cheer:
Weekly Alibi: What is the best part about being Santa?
Santa Claus: Seeing the kids smile and asking what they want for Christmas.
What do kids ask for the most?
In this day and age, they mostly ask for MP3 players and video games. There's only a few that ask for the bikes and the dolls.
For you, what is the most memorable thing that a child has asked for?
They asked that they just have a good Christmas and get to spend time with their family.
What do you want for Christmas?
I want all the good boys and girls to get what they want for Christmas.
What do you do during the rest of the year?
I make toys.
“In this day and age, they mostly ask for MP3 players and video games. There's only a few that ask for the bikes and the dolls.”
What is your favorite Christmas song?
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”
Which is your favorite reindeer?
[grins] Rudolf, of course.
What is your favorite kind of Christmas cookie?
What is your favorite Christmas movie?
The Santa Clause 2.
He had a kind face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was pink and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I smiled as I snapped a picture of him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know that was all to be said;
He bid me adieu and went straight to his work.
He greeted the children, then turned with a jerk,
Waving his hand in a cheerful good-bye,
He headed for his holiday throne with a sigh;
He sprang onto the chair, to his team gave a whistle,
And toward him the kids flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as I walked away—
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good day!”
