Benefit for Irish Freedom--The Irish Freedom Committee has organized a benefit in honor of the 25th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike at Long Kesh Prison. On Thursday, Sept. 14, the film Some Mother’s Son will show at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. Screenings will take place at 4:30, 6:45 and 9:15 p.m. There will be a Q&A session following the 6:45 screening. The film, starring Helen Mirren, Fionnula Flanagan and John Lynch, is based on the true story of the 1981 hunger strike in which IRA prisoner Bobby Sands led a protest against the treatment of IRA prisoners. Proceeds from the $7 ticket sales will go directly to the families of Irish Republican POWs currently in prison. For more information, log on to www.irishfreedomcommittee.net.

Foul is Fair--On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15 and 16, local filmmaker Aaron Hendren will present his new feature film The Faithful and the Foul at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. The film is a dark comedy about a stalker who divides his time between following the object of his affection and making life a living hell for a couple who was talking too loud during a movie. The cast is salted with fine Albuquerque acting talent including Chad Brummett, Summer Olsson, Julibeth Hendren, Dodie Montgomery and Abigail Blueher. Both screenings start at 10:30 p.m.

Walk-in Movies--516 Arts, a new museum-style gallery opening in Downtown Albuquerque (516 Central SW, to be precise), will have its first event this Saturday night from 8-10 p.m. “Sidewalk Vidi/Cine” is a pre-opening Window Project presented in partnership with Basement Films and the Guild Cinema. Bring a chair and join organizers outside for a series of screenings projected onto the 25-foot-high front windows of 516 Arts. If you can’t make it this weekend, don’t worry. Each Saturday night for six weeks (Sept. 16-Oct. 21), 516 Arts will present what Basement Films calls “a multi-projector extravaganza of retinal stimulation that will haunt your dreams and alter your reality.” Contributors include local faves Bryan Konefsky, Sarah Wentzel-Fisher and Elena Agustin. For more info, log on to www.516arts.org or www.basementfilms.org.

Ausherman and Associates--Local author Stephen Ausherman will present a night of short films, local talent and multimedia performances based on the fiction of (who else?) Stephen Ausherman. Night Weeding + Other Compulsions is linked to the release of Ausherman’s newest novel, Fountains of Youth. Written, shot, directed and choreographed by Stephen Ausherman, the evening will feature performances by Nicole Brady, Chuck Hawley, Nando Fresquez, Don McIver and Tony Santiago. Night Weeding will take place Sunday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. at the Guild Cinema. For more info, log on to www.restlesstribes.com/nwoc.
