Idiot Box

Deal or No Deal?

Nets ax shows

Clear the decks, people, it’s upfront season! In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, it’s that nerve-wracking time of year when the broadcast television networks start greenlighting pilots for the fall season, hammer out their schedules and decide what will and will not be returning in 2007-08.

Currently, pilots are still being cast, shot and (in many cases) recast and reshot. Only a small percentage of those pilots will get on the air as full TV series. But the networks have already made a few decisions about shows that are currently on their schedules. Will your favorites live to see another season?

ABC--The Alphabet Net has dumped “Day Break,” “The Great American Dream Vote” (after one inauspicious airing!) and “Show Me the Money.” (Sorry, Shatner, but you’ve got other gigs.) Shows whose fates are yet to be determined include: “20/20,” “According to Jim,” “Big Day” (don’t hold your breath on that one), “Extreme Makeover,” “The George Lopez Show,” “Help Me Help You,” “In Case of Emergency,” “The Knights of Prosperity,” “The Nine,” “October Road,” “Primetime,” “Saturday Night College Football,” “Six Degrees” and “What About Brian?”

NBC--The Peacock Network, desperately trying to repair its lost legacy, has only jettisoned “Kidnapped” so far. On the bubble are “1 vs. 100,” “20 Good Years” (that’s gone), “30 Rock” (that had better stick around), “Andy Barker, P.I.,” “The Black Donnellys,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Dateline” (the show will stick around, the only question is how many nightly slots will it be filling?), “Deal or No Deal” (ditto), “Friday Night Lights,” “Grease: You’re the One That I Want,” “Identity,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Medium,” “Raines,” “Scrubs” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”

CBS--The Eye Network has given the boot to “3 Lbs.,” “The King of Queens” (finally!), “Smith” and “Waterfront” (I don’t believe that one ever even made it on the air). CBS’s list of shows that have yet to receive offical renewal include: “48 Hours Mystery,” “60 Minutes,” “The Amazing Race,” “Armed & Famous” (not a chance), “C.S.I.,” “C.S.I.: Miami,” “C.S.I.: New York” (honestly, we wouldn’t miss one), “The Class,” “Close to Home,” “Cold Case,” “Criminal Minds,” “Gameshow Marathon,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Jericho,” “N.C.I.S.,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Numb3rs,” “Rock Star,” “Rules of Engagement,” “Shark,” “Two and a Half Men,” “The Unit” and “Without a Trace.”

FOX--Gone: “Happy Hour,” “Justice,” “The O.C.,” “The Rich List,” “Vanished.” Maybe gone: “24” (nope), “America’s Most Wanted” (nope), “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” (sadly, probably not), “COPS” (nope), “King of the Hill” (sadly, probably so), “Nanny 911” (we can only hope), “’Til Death” (ditto), “Trading Spouses” (please), “The War at Home” (adios), “The Wedding Belles” (wouldn’t miss it) and “The Winner” (we’ll give it a shot).

The CW--Ousted are longtime sitcom “Reba” and short-lived drama “Runaway.” Awaiting their fate are: “All of Us,” “America’s Next Top Model,” “Beauty and the Geek,” “The Game,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Girlfriends,” “One Tree Hill,” “Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll,” “Seventh Heaven,” “Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “Veronica Mars” and “WWE Smackdown.”
