From the people who brought you Hamlet the Vampire Slayer (no, really) comes Romeo & Juliet vs. The Living Dead . On Friday, March 13, Guild Cinema will host the premiere screening of this locally shot horror comedy. The film is directed by Ryan Denmark and stars Hannah Kauffmann, Jason Witter, Mark Chavez, Kate Schroeder, Kevin R. Elder and a whole host of familiar Albuquerque actors. Screenings will be at 7 and 9 p.m. and are absolutely free. Seating is limited, though. If you haven’t already sent your RSVP, you might be SOL. Reel World Get Your Irish Up
On Tuesday, March 17 (yup, that’s St. Patrick’s Day), the historic El Rey Theater in Downtown will host a “movie and music” screening of Alan Parker’s tuneful 1991 comedy The Commitments . Set in hardscrabble Northern Ireland, the film follows the trials and tribulations of the titular blue-eyed soul group. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The movie begins at 8 p.m. At 10 p.m. there will be a live performance by Leah Black and spinning by local DJs Justin George, Justin O’Brien and The Rev. Tickets can be purchased for $7 at the door the night of the show. This is a 21-and-over event.

I’ve been meaning to get word to our readers for some time now, but Lloyd Kaufman’s new book Direct Your Own Damn Movie! was released in trade paperback last month. This is notable not just because Kaufman has directed dozens of movies (including the immortal Toxic Avenger ) and founded one of the oldest independent film studios in America (Troma Entertainment, don’t you know). It’s notable not just because Kaufman is a frequent visitor to our state, showing up at least once a year to head the TromaDance New Mexico Film Festival. … No, it’s notable because the book is co-written by Albuquerque’s own Kurly Tlapoyawa. The name should be familiar to Alibi readers. In addition to owning Burning Paradise Video and helping to sponsor the Alibi Midnight Movie Madness screenings at Guild Cinema, Tlapoyawa is a regular contributor to the Alibi, penning our VideoNasty DVD review column. Pick up a copy of the this indispensable tome at your local bookstore for a mere $19.95.
