Spells, a low-budget romantic comedy shooting in Santa Fe starting mid-March, is looking for two featured roles. Producers need an “intelligent” female, aged 20 to 30, and a “handsome” male, 20 to 35. Both must be good at comedy. This film is being made under a low-budget SAG contract. Both SAG and non-SAG actors will be considered. The shoot is expected to last two weeks. To sign up for an audition, please submit photos and résumés electronically to daid@cybermesa.com.
Friends of Film, Video and Arts will have its monthly meeting on Sunday, Feb. 19. This iteration will include a tour of Albuquerque’s newest independent studio and production company, uPUBLIC. That’s the group poised to take control of the city’s Community Cable Channel 27 programming from longtime operator Quote ... Unquote, Inc. The tour takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. at the studio itself (907 Third Street NW). As usual, there will be plenty of time to meet and network with other filmmakers. FoFVA is also scheduled to start planning the annual Laugh Out Loud Funny Film Festival—the final deadline for which is Saturday, Feb. 25. The tour/meeting is free to current members or $10 to nonmembers. For more info on FoFVA or the upcoming LOL Fest, log on to filmvideoarts.org.
If you’re a local actor looking to nail down a little film time, you might want to investigate Santa Fe Cinema Casting. This new casting company, dedicated exclusively to background extra work, offers free online registration. People of all ages (that is, if you’re 18 and older), types and sizes are encouraged to put their profiles in the database. Santa Fe Cinema Casting is run by longtime casting and production services professional Judy Bell. Go to the company’s website , thumb through the list of “Dos and Don’ts” and send ’em your info if you’re interested. Pretty soon you could be getting paid to be “Townsperson” or “Bar Patron” or “That Girl Standing Behind Johnny Depp.”
Are you one of those fancy smartphone users? If so, may I suggest you download the spanking-new Guild Cinema app? This handy application keeps you up to date on all the screenings and special events happening at Albuquerque’s only independent movie theater. One-night-only stand-up comedy? A visit by actor Bruce Campbell? A triple feature of old-school kung fu movies? You wouldn’t miss these sorts of things if your phone was telling you what to do, now would you? Currently, the app—produced by local small business marketing firm Go Left Media—is only available for Android phones. Expect an iPhone version to follow soon. You can download it for free right now at the Android Markeplace.
It seems very misleading to me, to see in Alibi's Reel World column that uPublic is poised to take control of Channel 27 from Quote Unquote. As far as I can tell, the Cable Board just voted eloquently and unanimously to recommend that the Mayor continue to honor Quote Unquote's contract through 2017, so how is that uPublic taking control?
Your wording seems very suspect. Do you know something about back door deals with the Mayor or something? I'm confused, and I suggest you refrain from such subjective statements in further notices. The tour sounds interesting, but has nothing whatsoever to do with whether uPublic has taken control.
BTW, the 3 minute encapsulation of the Cable Board's decision in this matter is up on the QUQ site, and it is quite powerful.
this is the week for Larale to deconstruct my every word. Is it stalker season already?
The incredibly brief mention of the uPUBLIC tour above is as uneditorial as I could possibly make it. Alibi has reported on this contentious issue many times over the last few months. (There's even a link to our last story in the article above.)
Quote ... Unquote's contract was cancelled by the city last October. The group's eviction has been delayed until March 31. Unless something drastic has changed that I have not heard of, uPUBLIC is scheduled to take over management of Albuquerque's Public Access Cable station on April 1.
Yes, the Cable Board recently gave its recommendation to QUQ. I'm glad to hear it and hope that it's enough to sway the Mayor's opinion on this matter. But unless the Mayor and the City Council change their minds, uPUBLIC is still scheduled to take over on April 1. That's not me editorializing. That's me stating facts. I didn't endorsed uPUBLIC in any way. I didn't say the awarding of the contract to uPUBLIC was a good thing. Personally, I think the nonprofit that's been behind Public Access in this town for 30 years got a raw deal. I know a lot of people over at QUQ, and I wish them luck in their fight. Alibi will continue to report on this story as it develops.
In the meantime, if you're so inclined (and it sounds like you are), feel free to use this tour as a way to spy on the enemy.

I truly appreciate your response, and the blurb reads better to me now that you have added some clarification. I hope it will put the the situation in perspective for others as well, as I am not the only one who was bothered by the wording.
