Fade to Black

The New Mexico Film Office, in partnership with the Santa Fe Center for Contemporary Arts, kicks off the New Mexico Filmmakers Experience this Sunday, Feb. 17. This program of film screenings and panel discussions is intended to explore various aspects of the moviemaking experience among New Mexico filmmakers. The program starts off with a timely topic: Black History Month. This is a rare opportunity to see the work of local African-American filmmakers and to hear their views, opinions and experiences. Panelists include (filmmaker, journalist and television host) Gene Grant, (actress, producer and filmmaker) Diana Gaitirira, (actor, producer and filmmaker) Allan Gaitirira, (certified engineer and talk show host with uPUBLIC) Shaun Scott and (actor, writer, producer and assistant director) Sandi K. Shelby. This event is free and open to the public. Screenings and discussion will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Go to for more info.

Close to the Edit

Friends of Film, Video & Arts is hosting another knowledge-dropping get together. On Sunday, Feb. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m., the organization will host its monthly meeting. Following the requisite networking and screening of new work by members, there will be a panel discussion led by John Maio (professional photographer and post-production video and sound editor). The subject is “Shooting for Editing.” Maio asked about this topic in an online editor’s group and received great response. He’ll offer tons of tips and suggestions from professional editors (CHS News, PBS’ “Frontline” and others) on filming to make a better edit. This event will take place at Reel to Reel Productions (428 Louisiana SE). Cost is free to FoFVA members and $10 to nonmembers. For more info, go to
