In honor of Mardi Gras (I’m assuming), the National Hispanic Cultural Center will screen Marcel Camus’ gloriously beautiful 1958 film Black Orpheus/Orfeu Negro. The Academy Award-winning film famously takes the ancient Greek legend of Opheus and Eurydice and sets it during Brazil’s colorful Carnival season in Rio de Janeiro. The screening will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7pm in the Bank of America Theatre (1701 Fourth Street SW). This is a free, ticketed event. Tickets are available for pickup one hour before showtime at the box office.
Reel World: Jacked Up Jacked Up
The New Mexico Museum of Art and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will pay tribute to Tom Laughlin’s 1971 counterculture classic Billy Jack this Friday, Feb. 20. Filmed partially in Santa Fe, the film is an iconic mashup of antiestablishment filmmaking, 1970s hippie ethos, Native American spirituality and martial arts movies. The evening will begin at 6pm with introductory remarks by the Honorable Regis Pecos (Cochiti Pueblo), which will focus on the movie’s cultural implications. Teresa “TC” Laughlin, daughter of the director, who appeared in the movie as a child actor, will then deliver an extended videotaped greeting to the event. The film itself starts at 7pm. A suggested $5 donation gets you in the door. The New Mexico Museum of Art’s St. Francis Auditorium is located at 107 W. Palace Ave. in Santa Fe.
Reel World: Gender War Gender War
There will be a screening of the movie Rebel by Latina filmmaker Maria Agui Carter at UNM’s SUB Ballroom C on Thursday, Feb. 19. The 75-minute film presents the amazing true story of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, who served during the Civil War by crossdressing as a Confederate soldier-turned-Union spy. The screening starts at 6:30pm and will be followed by a discussion with Maria Agui Carter and UNM’s Dr. Jesse Alemán. The event is free and open to the public.

Looking for an appropriate venue in which to observe this weekend’s gold-clad award show event? This Sunday, Feb. 22, the historic KiMo Theatre will host “Awards Night in Hollywood,” a benefit for the Albuquerque Museum Foundation. Doors open at 5:30pm with a Red Carpet arrival. Inside the theater there will be food, champagne and “photos with the stars.” Door prize giveaways will continue throughout the night as you watch the live broadcast—hosted by Albuquerque’s own Neil Patrick Harris—starting at 6:30pm. Tickets are $35 a person and include an appetizer buffet, a glass of champagne and a night of award show viewing on the KiMo’s gigantic screen.
