Fans of horror, fantasy and all things darkly delicious should be excited by this week’s news. Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival, the second installment in the musical-horror-fantasy film series by director Darren Lynn Bousman and writer/actor Terrance Zdunich (the men behind cult sensation Repo! The Genetic Opera), is crossing America as part of a traveling roadshow premiere. The tuneful, supernatural fantasy concerns a circus-like battle between God and Lucifer. It stars Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Adam Pascal (SLC Punk!), Ted Neeley (Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar), Barry Bostwick (Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show), David Hasselhoff (The Hoff!), Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Nivek Ogre (from industrial band Skinny Puppy) and Mr. Zdunich (as the Devil himself). The roadshow event—which mixes film screening, live sideshow acts, costume contests, sing-alongs, celebrity guest appearances and live audience Q&As with the filmmakers—will stop over in Albuquerque this Thursday, Aug. 27, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth SW). The one-night-only event starts at 6pm in the center’s Bank of America Theater. Tickets—some of which include a live, 45-minute meet-and-greet experience with director Bousman and writer/star Zdunich—are on sale now at thedevilscarnival.com.

Reel World: These Are The Droids We’re Looking For These Are The Droids We’re Looking For

Bubonicon, Albuquerque’s homegrown science fiction convention, returns this weekend for an astounding 47th annual outing. The concentration is, of course, on sci-fi and fantasy literature—but with Hollywood so crazy about genre fiction these days, there’s plenty of spill-over into film and television. Not to worry: Star Wars, “Star Trek” and “Doctor Who” will all be well-represented at Bubonicon 47. George R.R. Martin—whose Song of Fire and Ice book series is making HBO a lot of money under the title “Game of Thrones”—will be there for a reading (Sat 12:30pm) and autograph session (Sat. 5:25pm). Daniel Abraham—whose hard sci-fi series The Expanse is being turned into a major TV series by Syfy—will also be on hand (Sat. 11am). The Cheese Magnet gang, moderated by John Jos. Miller, will be discussing their love of schlocky B-movies in a panel discussion (Fri. 9:30pm). Melinda Snodgrass, writer for “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “The Outer Limits,” will moderate a panel titled “Is Hollywood Eating Sci-Fi Alive?” (Sat. 3pm). And on Saturday night, Adam J. Brown will be hosting his annual Saturday-Nite Cinema Theatre. Among this year’s selection of locally made film shorts are Brian Morelan’s “Mining Moon” and Mikel Jon West’s “Happy Birthday to Me.” For a complete schedule of events, go to bubonicon.com
