Movies in New Mexico

The Corrales Historical Society will present movie-minded speaker Jeff Berg on Thursday, Sept. 8. Starting at 7pm Berg will give his “Made in New Mexico II” lecture/presentation. This two-hour talk, punctuated by frequent film clips and trailers, highlights films shot right here in the Land of Enchantment—from Red Sky at Morning to True Grit to The Milagro Beanfield War. Berg is a film historian, a journalist and the author of New Mexico Filmmaking, which will be available for purchase at the lecture. This event is free and open to the public and will take place at the historic Old San Ysidro Church (966 Old Church Road in Corrales).

Snow Show

Movies on the Plaza is back for another night of free, family-friendly entertainment. It’s hard to imagine a parent out there who isn’t sick of watching Disney’s Frozen at this point. But if you’d like to check out this clever (and extremely loose) animated take on the “Snow Queen” myth, there will be a screening at dusk (around 8pm) at the Albuquerque Civic Plaza on Friday, Sept. 9. Show up early and catch music from the Chuck Hawley Group and craft beer from Marble Brewery. (That ought to make the umpteenth replay of “Let It Go” a little more palatable.)

The New Mexico Film Foundation has several writing-based contests up for grabs, and the deadlines are fast approaching. If you’re an aspiring screenwriter, this is a chance to get your vision on the road to realization. First up is the George R.R. Martin Screenwriting Grant. In order to be eligible, you must be a New Mexico resident, 18 or older and not a member of the Writer’s Guild of America. You need to submit a five-page story treatment and the first five pages of a script for an original feature-length film or television series. In deference to the man fronting the money, submissions must be in the science-fiction or fantasy genre. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 16. Winners will be announced Nov. 15. For complete details go to

New Mexico Film foundation is also sponsoring The Tale Writer’s Script Conference, which will take place May 18 through 21, 2017. As part of the run-up to the inaugural conference, NMFF is hosting the Tale Writers Scholastic Scriptwriting Contest, a writing competition open to New Mexico high school and college students. Submit a short (10-page) film script for a chance to win free conference VIP passes, cash awards and other prizes. A $35 entry fee must accompany each submission. For non-school-age writers, there’s the Tale Writers Open Screenwriters Competition. All you’ve got to do is submit the first five pages of your feature-length script. Three of the scripts will be chosen to be read by professional actors in front of a live audience and a panel of independent producers. One screenwriter will be awarded a VIP pass to the conference. Cash and other prizes are also up for grabs. Submission fee for the Open Screenwriters Competition is $50. The deadline for submitting to either of of these contests is Monday, Sept. 19.
