Week in Sloth
Creature Feature Thursday (TCM 6pm) Every Thursday in May features a monster movie marathon. Today we get 1954’s Them! (giant ants), 1956’s Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (giant fire-breathing lizard), 1955’s It Came From Beneath the Sea (giant octopus), 1959’s The Giant Behemoth (radioactive dinosaur) and 1955’s The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues (mutated ... fish thing ... with claws?)
“Naked and Afraid: Pop-Up Edition” (Discovery 7pm) Um. Couldn’t you think of a better name for enhanced reruns of your unclothed survival reality show, Discovery? The resultant mental imagery is unfortunate.
“The Keepers” (Netflix streaming anytime) True crime is hot right now, and Netflix jumps on board with this documentary mystery series exploring the disappearance and murder of a 26-year-old nun and school teacher in 1969. Spoiler alert: The Catholic church does not come off looking good in this narrative.
“The New I Love Lucy Superstar Spectacular” (KRQE-13 8pm) In this colorized episode of “I Love Lucy” from 1955, Mrs. Ricardo dances with Van Johnson. Trust me, in 1955, he counted as a superstar. He was in a lot of war movies (A Guy Named Joe, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, Battleground, The Cain Mutiny).
“Nick Offerman & Megan Mullally—Summer of 69: No Apostrophe” (Epix 8pm) The celebrity sitcom power couple bring their raunchy, comic stage show about sex, love, sex, marriage and sex to Epix. There will be songs. About sex.
Becoming Bond (Hulu streaming anytime) This documentary/
The Wizard of Lies (HBO 6pm) Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this biopic about infamous financial defrauder Bernie Madoff.
“2017 Billboard Music Awards” (KOAT-7 7pm) The Chainsmokers have 22 nominations, amply demonstrating why I don’t care about the outcome of tonight’s awards.
“Twin Peaks: The Return” (7pm Showtime) Honestly, I never really understood the original, but I’m still really excited anyway.
“The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2017” (KRQE-13 9pm) Host James Corden looks back at his favorite moments from the past year, including plenty of Carpool Karaoke segments. Katy Perry drops by for a new segment of singing and riding along.
“Downward Dog” (KOAT-7 7pm) A lonely, philosophical dog provides voice-over narration for this sitcom, making observations on the life of his owner, a struggling millennial named Nan. This one’s based on the web series, which is rarely a good idea. But it does star Allison Tolman, who was awesome in the first season of “Fargo.”
Dirty Dancing (KOAT-7 7pm) Having done live remakes of every musical in Broadway history (evidently), ABC turns to remaking a movie. That wasn’t actually a musical. Also, it won’t be performed live. Colt Prattes (a back-up dancer for Pink) stars as Johnny Castle. Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) stars as “Baby” Houseman. Nicole Scherzinger, Debra Messing, Bruce Greenwood and Sarah Hyland round out the cast.
