Familiar, funny coming-of-age tale is a tart popsicle amid the summer’s usual sugary offerings

Comedic actors Nat Faxon (“Ben and Kate”) and Jim Rash (“Community”) walked off with a couple of Oscars for their efforts screenwriting director Alexander Payne’s 2011 hit The Descendants. Two years later and they’ve finally capitalized on the Hollywood bonhomie, writing—and directing—their own original feature.
Last weekend dozens of film crews raced around Albuquerque attempting to write, shoot and edit dozens of digital shorts in only two days. This was not some form of mass hysteria. Instead it was just another installment of the annual 48 Hour Film Project.
Netflix has been making news lately, claiming it is no longer a permanent lending library of films—like Blockbuster used to be. Instead it’s now a television station with a rotating selection of movies and some original content—à la HBO. This is disappointing to those of us who really want access to a permanent lending library of films. But the company’s argument is growing ever more solid as it continues to pump out original content like “Hemlock Grove,” “Arrested Development” and what is looking like its biggest breakout, the edgy comedy “Orange Is the New Black.”
