Divine Intervention

This minimalist, episodic and mostly silent satire finds a surprising level of humor in the bleak life on the border between Israel and Palestine. Largely plotless, the film follows assorted West Bank neighbors as they argue, curse each other, toss trash in one another's yards and otherwise go quietly nuts inside the pressure cooker that is the Middle East. Palestinian writer-director Elia Suleiman (who also stars) eschews war stories and heavy politics for a look at ordinary people trapped under impossible conditions. The result is a challenging, absurdist mixture of Waiting for Godot, M*A*S*H* and Dr. Strangelove 92 minutes
