Chi-hwa-seon (Painted Fire)

Captivating and exquisitely lensed, this passionate, challenging biopic is the first of South Korean master Im Kwon-taek's 90(!) films to recieve a stateside release. The film spins the life story of Jang "Ohwan" Seung-ub, a famous 19th century painter who—despite his vain, drunken, womanizing ways—became a brilliant and celebrated artist. Slow at times, confusingly rapid at others, but rarely less than visually exquisite, Chi-hwa-seon paints an exacting portrait of artistic creation. Think Frida in the Far East. In Korean with English subtitles. 117 minutes
