Stevie

Documentary director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) returned to his hometown in rural Illinois (camera in hand) to reconnect with a troubled young boy named Stevie he had been a Big Brother to ten years earlier. Shortly after filming began, the now adult Stevie was arrested and charged with a shocking crime. Raw, unpolished and entirely unsentimental, this portrait of dysfunctional families, child abuse and the Purgatory that is small-town America is hard to look away from. It sounds like a downer, and it's certainly not cheerful, but Stevie is a brave and utterly mesmerizing character study of both filmmaker and subject. 140 minutes
