Wondering why times are missing?

Under the Skin of the City

Like most films that have found their way out of Iran of late, Rakhshan Bani Etemad's latest is a humble, low-key but utterly revealing look at the lives of contemporary Iranian citizens. The film concerns a wife and mother who works a grueling job at a textile factory. At home, her husband is a bedridden wreck, her daughter is pregnant and abused, her young son is into radical politics and her older son is ready to chuck it all for a job in Japan. You can't exactly accuse this, at times melodramatic, family tale of being cheerful, but it does present an unflinching neorealist look at today's rapidly changing Middle East. In Farsi with English subtitles. 92 minutes
