The Human Stain

Anthony Hopkins stars as a widowed college professor wrongly accused of racism in this adaptation of Phillip Roth's critically acclaimed novel. He starts up an affair with a much younger women (Nicole Kidman) and we get lots of flashbacks of his mysterious past. Everyone involved, from cast to crew, is beyond reproach, but the film feels distant and dull. The actors are probably miscast, and the script struggles with the book's complex, three-pronged narrative. There are flashes of quality filmmaking, but the overall effect is too intellectual and antiseptic. 106 minutes
