Wondering why times are missing?

Elephant

Director Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting) tackles a thorny subject (high school shootings) with a delicate hand. Using a largely unprofessional cast and a mostly improvised script, he recreates the drudgery and tedium of high school life, tracing the meanderings of several teens as they cross paths on one fateful day. The violence, when it arrives, carries with it the requisite amount of numb shock. Van Sant's scant, repetitive story doesn't exactly provide any answers to the bloody mystery of "why?" while his drifting camerawork may lull some viewers to sleep. Still, the film carries with it a sneaky, subliminal impact that's hard to shake. 82 minutes
