Wondering why times are missing?

Bollywood/Hollywood

Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta (Fire, Earth) tries her best to make an exhuberant deconstruction of cross-cultural movie politics with this loopy love story. The plot concerns a young Indian man in love with a non-Indian actress, much to the distress of his traditional family. Mehta tries to send up Bollywood traditions by (among other things) staging elaborate musical numbers. In the end, though, the story feels too close to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, while the movie's patchwork parody fails to make particularly pointed jabs at either titular institution. In English, Hindi and Spanish with English subtitles. 105 minutes
