Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space

Sci-fi goes surreal with this bizarre Japanese cartoon courtesy of musical/visual artist duo t.o.L. Described as "a mutant hybrid of Hello Kitty and Philip K. Dick," this experimental black & white (mostly) cartoon follows the adventures of cute but foul-mouthed space kitty Tamala as she searches for the faraway planet of her birth. Along the way, she meets up with a kinky police dog, the God of Death and a robotic Colonel Sanders and becomes a pawn of the cult-like Catty & Co. corporation. Done up in the retro '50s style of Osamu Tezuka ("Astro Boy") and featuring loads of freaked out visuals, this outrageous piece of cutting edge animé manages to satirize everything from consumerism to religion to the films of Clint Eastwood. In Japanese with English subtitles. 93 minutes
