Basically everything that Akira Kurosawa did was a masterpiece. This 1952 film is one of his modern domestic dramas--not as explosive as the samurai films, but quite beloved for its humanity. Takashi Shimura stars as a longtime bureaucrat slaving away as an office worker. Day in and day out, he and his co-workers do nothing of significance other than earn a paycheck. One day, our protagonist is diagnosed with cancer and decides its time to start living life. Touching, thought-provoking and filled with fine moments of humor, this newly restored print is an excellent addition to any film lovers' "must see" list. In Japanese with English subtitles. 140 minutes
