The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Was the United States involved in the shadowy, unsuccessful Venezuelan coup of 2002? Our government denied it, but when democratically elected President Hugo Chavez was briefly overthrown by a cabal of rich businessmen and army officers, some folks had to wonder. Amazingly, Chavez was back in power within days thanks to the hundreds of thousand of supporters who took to the streets. This amazing documentary comes from two Irish filmmakers who just happened to be in the palace during the entire episode. The film never finds a smoking gun implicating the U.S. government in this oil-fueled overthrow, but it does implicate the Bush administration and American media outlets for their part in disseminating some of the outrageous lies put forth by Chavez' enemies. The film is heavily biased in favor of Chavez, of course, but it's hard not to be. A frightening look at modern-day politics. In English and Spanish with English subtitles. 74 minutes
