The Statement

Michael Caine stars in this kinda controversial, but kinda muddled thriller by Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night, Moonstruck). Caine plays a long-lost French police officer who collaborated with the Nazis during World War II and has spent the last 50 years or so running from bloodthirsty bounty hunters as well as a couple intrepid French investigators (Tilda Swinton and Jeremy Northam). The controversial part (inspired by Brian Moore's book of the same name) is that ultra-conservative members of the Catholic church have conspired to keep him hidden all these years. Jewison seems to be reaching for a sort of John le Carré thriller packed with juicy political revelations, but the script is lackluster and pretty much everybody is ridiculously miscast. 120 minutes
