Fog of War

This fascinating, timely documentary by Errol Morris (Gates of Heaven, Thin Blue Line) is basically an uniterrupted rant by former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. In recounting his whole, controversial history--from planning the firebombings of Tokyo during World War II to engineering the Vietnam War--McNamara imparts 11 "lessons" that he has learned. While he remains as icy and unapologetic as critics accuse him of being, he often sounds like the sanest person in a room. Admire him or hate him, McNamara is a fascinating man, and Morris' talking head look at this complicated figure feels like essential viewing. 95 minutes
