Dogville

Director Lars Von Trier's latest cinematic experiment is either totally brilliant or painfully unwatchable. Flip a coin. Both assessments are correct. Me, I'm leaning toward "brilliant," but I can sympathize with the "unwatchable" crowd. Set on a nearly barren stage, this intimate Depression-era parable finds mysterious gangster moll Nicole Kidman wandering into a tiny mountain town seeking refuge. The acting is incredible and the setting works wonder. Von Trier's taste for torturing and humiliating women (see also: Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) takes over fairly quickly, though, making for rough going throughout most of the film's excessive run time. I hate to say it, but the ending is probably worth the wait. For strong-willed fans of arty cinema only. 177 minutes
