To Be and to Have

This simple documentary carries with it a powerful charm. Director Nicolas Philibert set out to create an emotionally affecting portrait of a one-room schoolhouse in rural France, and it became one of the highest grossing films in recent French history. The subject is George Lopez, teacher, father, judge, therapist and friend to a tiny group of adolescents in beautiful Auvergne, France. Philibert gently documents the teacher, the school, the students and the parents, creating an innocent portrait of primitive, pastoral life. In French with English subtitles. 104 minutes
