Kitchen Stories

Quirky is the word to describe this oddball comedy/drama from Sweden. The plot has a group of scientists studying the cooking habits of bachelors in an attempt to increase kitchen efficiency circa 1950. The scientists (who, apparently, really did exist in post-war Sweden) were, under no circumstances, allowed to talk to their subjects. The first third of the film is slow and nearly silent, but it eventually narrows in on one particular scientist and his subject, an aged bachelor in rural Norway. As the near-surreal situation advances, the bored observer and the lonely subject become friends. Some bright visual gags liven up the early going, while the fine-tuned actors give the rest of the film its emotional heft. 95 minutes
