The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Jacques Demy's lush 1964 musical unfolds without a trace of cynicism—which is kind of surprising since it's a bittersweet French art film in which all the dialogue is sung. The simple, soapy story has a young woman (Catherine Deneuve) falling for a hunky local mechanic, but being wooed by a rich businessman. Even today it's easy to see what entranced 1960s audiences about the ravishing Miss Deneuve, who had her breakthrough role here. Demy's film is certainly a color-soaked feast for the eyes, and it's worthwhile seeing on the big screen in this freshly restored print. 87 minutes
