The Flower of Evil

Longtime French filmmaker Claude Chabrol (Bitter Reunion, Les Cousins, La Cérémonie, Merci pour le Chocolat), lobs his latest aloof critique of the bourgeoise at international audiences. The aristocratic clan of this languid thriller has all the usual skeletons in the closet (murder, incest, betrayal, Nazi sympathizing), all of which come out when mom decides to run for mayor. The film wanders around quite a bit, never quite nailing the icy amorality of Vittorio De Sica's Garden of the Finzi-Continis. Still, lingering fans of Chabrol's contribution to the French New Wave will appreciate the film's elegant soap opera stylings. In French with English subtitles. 104 minutes
