The United States of Leland

This tedious, melodramatic and insufferably self-important morality play has a point to make, but you'll be hard-pressed to squeeze it out. Ryan Gosling plays a saintly, gosh-darn nice high school kid who commits the savage, senseless murder of an autistic teen. The movie hems and haws, sympathizing with everyone from the poor emotionally stunted teens to the poor emotionally stunted adults. Why did Leland do it? Who know, who cares. The cast is filled with good actors (Don Cheadle, Lena Olin, Kevin Spacey), none of which put much effort in this mopey, subplot-littered tale. 108 minutes
