Wondering why times are missing?

Bus 174

The shocking immediacy of this award-winning documentary comes from the fact that much of it was shot while the events were actually taking place. It is the story of a 21-year-old Brazilian street thug who, in June of 2000, hijacked a commuter bus in an upscale neighborhood of Rio. Police badly bungled the situation, allowing the kid to take hostages for five hours, letting TV camera crews wander through the scene and eventually forcing the whole thing into a violent showdown. Director Jose Padilha picks apart Brazil's culture of abject poverty by providing a serious portrait of social conditions, the very conditions that led to this deadly standoff. In Portuguese with English subtitles. 122 minutes
