This heartbreakingly simple drama is, in fact, the first film made in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban. When a 12-year-old girl and her single mother lose their jobs at a hospital, a scheme is hatched to present the girl as a boy. Under Taliban rule, of course, women have no rights at all. A simple haircut and a change of clothes, however, make a world of difference. A brave effort by Afghani filmmaker Siddiq Barmak and reminiscent of recent Iranian films. In Dari and Pashtu with English subtitles. 82 minutes
