Young Adam

Already notorious for its NC-17 "winkie shot" of Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan, no!), this dark drama is almost (but not quite) a Scottish retelling of The Postman Always Rings Twice. McGregor is Joe, a mysterious drifter who goes to work on a cargo barge owned by Les (Peter Mullen, The Magdalene Sisters) and his wife Ella (melanin-deprived Tilda Swinton) circa 1950. Naturally, an attraction of the sweaty kind develops between Joe and Ella. One day, a dead body floats by and it looks like Joe knows more than he's telling. It's mostly a lot of sex and brooding, but the story gets more complex as it builds, dropping assorted emotional hand grenades along the way. Slow, circuitous and downbeat as hell, this one's based on the long overlooked Beat-era book by Alexander Trocchi. 93 minutes
