Dark Days

First-time documentarian Marc Singer spent more than two years filming and interviewing a large community of homeless people living in the abandoned subway tunnels underneath Manhattan. Eventually, Singer invested every penny he had in the project and became homeless himself. For a time, he lived with the tunnel dwellers, who became his impromptu film crew. The result is this eye-opening cultural study about how life flourishes, even on the fringes of society. Audience Choice Award winner at Sundance and a shoo-in for this year's Best Documentary Oscar. 94 minutes
