The Agronomist

Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) returns to his indie roots with this scrappy documentary about Jean Dominique, a Haitian radio station owner and human rights activist assassinated in 2000 for his tireless efforts against tyranny. The film is a loving elegy that paints Dominique as an energetic and charismatic fighter for free speech—a dangerous avocation in a country ruled by a succession of dictators and power-brokers. A little more information on Dominique's revolutionary ideas might have been nice, but the film is still an illuminating portrait of everyday heroism—a lesson pampered Americans would do well to study. 90 minutes
