The Agronomist

Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) returns to his indie roots with this scrappy documentary about Jean Dominique, a Haitian radio station owner and human rights activist assassinated in 2000 for his tireless efforts against tyranny. The film is a loving elegy that paints Dominique as an energetic and charismatic fighter for free speech--a dangerous avocation in a country ruled by a succession of dictators and power-brokers. A little more information on Dominique's revolutionary ideas might have been nice, but the film is still an illuminating portrait of everyday heroism--a lesson pampered Americans would do well to study. 90 minutes
