The Story of the Weeping Camel

This gorgeous documentary (produced, none too surprisingly, by the National Geographic Society) is the work of an Italian/Mongolian filmmaking duo. The film is described as a "narrative documentary," as the filmmakers set out to tell a specific story. The story in question is a legendary Mongolian tradition of performing an ancient musical ritual to reunite a mother camel and her abandoned calf (something that happens often in livestock-dependent Mongolia). The film skillfully captures a fading way of life among simple nomadic peoples and does so with beauty and emotion (and cute animals). 88 minutes
