Wondering why times are missing?

Open Water

This low-budget chiller was a big audience hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival. First-time director Chris Kentis set out to make a creepy combo of The Blair Witch Project and Jaws. He more or less succeeded. The story, based loosely on true events, strands a couple of vacationing yuppie scuba divers (Blanchard Ryan, Daniel Travis) in the middle of the ocean and soon surrounds them with an army of hungry sharks. Kentis couldn't afford special effects, so he just tossed his actors into a real ocean with real sharks and turned on his video cameras. This cinema vérité knowledge gives the film a palpably tense edge. The slim plot, singular setting and cheap camera work distract a bit from the overall experience, but curiosity could make this a major cult hit. 79 minutes
