Wondering why times are missing?

Vanity Fair

I don't exactly hate Reese Witherspoon, but I've always found her colorless and forgettable. Witherspoon does her best here in an adaptation of the epic novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. Still, it's director Mira (Monsoon Wedding) Nair's lush visuals that take front and center. Witherspoon plays Thackeray's ambitious heroine, a poverty-born Londoner who decides to scale the heights of Regency Period English society. There's lots of romance, intrigue, secret loves and fancy dress balls. Credible cast includes Gabriel Byrne, Jim Broadbent, Rhys Ifans, Bob Hoskins, Geraldine McEwan and a whole lot of people (Witherspoon aside) with real British accents. If you're jonesing for some hardcore Jane Austen-style action, this will probably scratch your itch. 137 minutes
