Mean Creek

This blunt teen drama recalls the bleak but thoughtful atmosphere of River's Edge. In it, a bunch of young kids decide to get revenge of a sort on a chubby, spoiled bully who pushes them around at school. They lure him into the woods, and that's when things get complicated. First-time writer/director Jacob Aaron Estes has created a film with surprising depth. Rarely do we see kids dealing with weighty moral issues. This one's a long way from the one-dimensional revenge dramas that adults traffic in so often (Paparazzi being the latest, most flagrant example). The youthful acting ensemble (led by Macaulay sib Rory Culkin) is amazingly natural. 87 minutes
