Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry

This insightful historical documentary is one of the less partisan films to come out of this fall's nonfiction overload. The director obviously admires Kerry, but he lets the truth of the story tell its own tale. The film concentrates largely on the events of April, 1971, when a huge group of Vietnam vets converged in Washington, hoping to tell their stories to Congress. A young John Kerry emerged as the group's speaker and delivered an impassioned plea to the Senate. Kerry's speech, delivered in its entirety here, stands in shocking contrast to certain cut-and-paste television commercials of today. Though it makes a good case for Kerry as a strong and compassionate leader, it also delivers an emotional snapshot of what Vietnam veterans went through when they came home, and how exactly they were treated by their "grateful" government. 90 minutes
