No, you're never gonna top the Michael Caine-led original, but this sharp remake has its moments. Jude Law is perfectly cast as the happy-go-lucky English cad, Alfie Elkins, sleeping his way through a bevy of New York's finest ladies (including Marisa Tomei, Nia Long, Jane Krakowski and Susan Sarandon). The sex-crazed fashionista in Manhattan smacks a bit of "Sex and the City," but writer/director Charles Shyer (Baby Boom, Father of the Bride) creates a memorable mod fairy tale atmosphere in which to relate this comedy/drama/morality play. Karma does seem to work a bit too efficiently in this universe, but Alfie's romantic comeuppance is handled with a certain measure of melancholy and emotion. 103 minutes R.
