Vera Drake

Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) serves up another impeccable drama. This one tells the story of Vera Drake, a much-beloved housewife in postwar England, who takes care of family, friends and neighbors with selfless good cheer. She also happens to be a secret abortionist, "helping out" poor gals who find themselves in an unexpected family way. The film works mostly as a kitchen sink drama and makes few comments on the morality of the abortion issue. When Vera's secret life is finally exposed, however, the film generates some interesting questions about the issue of "justice." Star Imelda Staunton does a simply devastating job. 125 minutes
