Stage Beauty

Sharing much the same energy, wit and love for theater as Shakespeare in Love, this romantic comedy takes us back to 1660s London. Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is the toast of the English theater, the most famous "female" impersonator on the Shakespearean stage. Unfortunately, newly restored King Charles II (Rupert Everett) decides it's high time real women were actually allowed to act on stage. Naturally, this is the death knell of Kynaston's career and a major boost to his loyal dresser (Claire Danes), who dreams of a career on stage. The romance stuff is pretty predictable, but the detailed script and the boisterous cast make this an entertaining history lesson. 110 minutes
