A Very Long Engagement

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet reunites with his Amélie star Audrey Tautou for this mysterious romantic drama about a determined young woman on a quest to find her lost love, who has disappeared in the trenches of World War I. Jeunet's direction is, as always, quirky and filled with visual delights. His take on the horrors of war is simultaneously grisly, beautiful and absurd. (A sequence involving a bomb a warehouse and a zeppelin, has an inventive Rube Goldberg genius to it.) However, if you disliked the quirky whimsy of Amélie, you'll probably be turned off by this more serious (but still stylishly strange) effort. 134 minutes
