Daniel Handler's Edward Gorey-inspired young adult novels spring to imaginative life in this gothic black comedy. When their parents are killed in a fire, three wealthy children are sent to live with a bizarre distant relative (Jim Carrey), who's busily plotting their demise. The cast is filled with ringers (Meryl Streep, Billy Connolly, Jennifer Coolidge, Jude Law), but Carrey has the most fun as evil Count Olaf, who possesses a penchant for disguise. If only the story were as strong as the visuals. 108 minutes PG.
