Hotel Rwanda

Sadly, most filmgoers will ignore this film for the same reason they ignored the war that inspired it: It just sounds too depressing to contemplate. Nonetheless, this is an eye-opening, must-see drama chronicling the true-life efforts of one luxury hotel manager in Rwanda (the excellent Don Cheadle) to house hundreds of refugees displaced by brutal ethnic cleansing. There are certainly shades of Schindler's List here, but the story concentrates less on everyday heroism and more on the utter, incomprehensible madness of this African war that claimed more than 800,000 victims. Shattering stuff. 110 minutes
