The Assassination of Richard Nixon

Sean Penn gives another acting tour de force in this true-life drama. Penn stars as Samuel Bicke, perhaps the biggest schlub to ever hit the big screen. Bicke was a failed, recently divorced businessman who became obsessed with President Richard Nixon. In Bicke's mind, Nixon was the ultimate symbol of the successful white man, while he was the ultimate symbol of failure. Unable to achieve the tiniest sliver of the American Dream, Bicke decided he had to kill the President. Needless to say, he wasn't any more successful in that venture. As you can probably guess, the film is a major downer. But it captures the grim, character-driven feel of a 1970s film (think Taxi Driver or Joe), with Penn delivering a grippingly pathetic performance. 95 minutes
