William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice

Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Joseph Fiennes star in this faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's dark "comedy" of Venetian back alley intrigue. Irons stars as Antonio, who borrows money from a Jewish loanshark (Pacino), so his poor pal (Fiennes) can get married. The main reason for being here is Pacino's performance as nasty loanshark Shylock, who gets a bit of sympathy in this version. It's a role Pacino's owned on stage for some time, and he leaves behind a strong impression. Unfortunately, everyone else is underwhelming, and some of Shakespeare's subtext (Antonio and Bassanio's homosexual connection) was better left in the "sub" category. 138 minutes
